India’s freedom struggle wasn’t only led by brave men. Many brave women, too, stepped up and made history. These female freedom fighters stood against injustice, led movements and inspired generations with their courage and patriotism. Their stories need to be told and shared.
The queen of Jhansi fought against British forces during the 1857 revolt and became a symbol of resistance.
Known as the Nightingale of India, she was a poet, speaker and strong political leader who played a key role in the Civil Disobedience Movement.
Aruna became famous during the Quit India Movement by hoisting Indian flag at Gowalia Tank ground in 1942, defying British orders.
Bhikaji unfurled the Indian flag in Germany and worked internationally to spread awareness about India’s freedom struggle.
Kamala was a strong supporter of her husband’s political work and actively participated in protests and inspired women to join the freedom fight.
Associate of Bhagat Singh, she helped him escape after Saunders’ assassination and was fearless in carrying weapons and secret messages.
As a teenager she set up a secret radio station during Quit India Movement and spread messages of freedom when newspapers were banned.
