Introduction

Art and craft activities can be a fun and recreational experience for kids who want to utilize their time more meaningfully. There is much scope for engagement and creativity, as one can draw, paint, and make craft projects using several elements. One of the best aspects of craft activities is that they can be done using materials already available at home.

Craft activities don't mean one has to spend loads of money on sourcing expensive materials. Using the right techniques and being creative can turn the most useless stuff around the house into a fun and lively craft activity. Crafting is not only helpful for making the best use of a child's leisure time, but it can also enhance their creativity, focus, and encourage them to think out of their comfort zone.

Art and Craft Activities for Kids Using Materials At Home

To make your child's daily routine more fun and interesting, here is a list of easy-to-do craft activities using common household materials.

Paper Plate Crown

Instead of buying a crown from the market, you and your child can make one at home using a paper plate. All you need to make this paper crown is a paper plate, scissors, decorative material, like buttons or stones, and a glue stick. To make this crown, you need to fold a paper plate into half and then cut it into three different slits with the help of a scissor. This would divide the paper plate into four sections, after which you may unfold it. Upon opening the plate, you will see that it has eight triangles spread across the corners. On this crown, you may ask your child to paste different decorative items.

Rainbow

This is another engaging craft activity that can be made with the help of a paper plate. To do this, you need to cut the paper plate in half and then draw seven curves like a rainbow. Into each of these sections, your child may add different colours of a rainbow. Once the painting colour dries down, you may ask your kid to paste some cotton on both ends to give a realistic look to your craft project.

Paper Flower

A paper flower is one of the easiest yet most satisfying craft activities you can do at home. For this, you can collect some scrap paper and then fold it into different shapes. For example, a sheet of paper can be folded into various sections like a fan and then opened up. This process must be repeated until you have four such small fans joined together to make a flower. Similarly, you can also ask your child to make a flower using tissues.

DVD Owl

If you have a lot of waste DVDs or CDs kept at home, it's time to revamp them and make something exciting for your child. You may take these DVDs and ask your child to paint them vibrant colors like blue or maroon. Once the paint dries down, you may ask your child to make some cutouts in the shape of an eye and a beak with the help of colourful paper charts. This can be pasted on the DVD to give it an appearance like that of an owl. On the sides of the DVD, you may paste some feathers and hang the DVD owl with the help of a thread.

Water Bottle Flower

One of the best ways to creatively use leftover plastic bottles is to cut their bottom-most part. Next, you can take this cutout and ask your child to paint it with some paint colour. The middle part of the cut-out should be painted in a different color to give it a look like a flower bud. Once this is done, let the bottle cutout dry for a while. Now you may attach a stem-like straw to the cutout to make it look like a proper flower.

Wood Shaving Nest

When one receives a package, there are a lot of wood shavings in between to protect the material. These wood shavings can be utilised to make a beautiful nest that can be used for decoration purposes. First, you may ask your child to take some cotton balls and dip them in different types of color solutions. After it dries down, your child may paste small eyes and peaks on the cotton balls to make them look like little birds. Now on cardboard, you may paste a lot of wood shavings to make it look like a nest and keep your cotton birds in between the nest.

Rock Paper Weight

A paper weight is extremely useful in day-to-day life, especially for kids who make a lot of notes and diagrams and want to secure them in a place while studying. Instead of buying a paperweight from the market, you and your kid can make one at home, using some rocks available near your house. Try to look for a flat and smooth rock before painting it with a vibrant color. Now, onto this rock, you may add different types of patterns with the help of paint, a sketch pen, or some decorative material.

Conclusion

Each of these art activities can be easily done by using some commonly available material at home. Moreover, they are not just engaging but extremely useful as the craft items can be used for decoration purposes or in day-to-day life.
